Description of the picture
Tristan and Isolde are legendary characters of medieval chivalric novels. There are parallels to the motifs of the novel in tales from the Old East, Antiquity, the Caucasus and others, but in the poetry of feudal Europe this tale came in a Celtic form, with Celtic names and characteristic everyday features. The tale originated in the region of Ireland and Celticized Scotland and was first historically attached to the name of the Pictish prince Drustan, or Drostan (VIII century).
